MacBook Pro

written by Ryan Olshan on Saturday, June 21 2008

Yesterday, I purchased a MacBook Pro. I'm still getting over the learning curve and I'm really pleased with it. I'm using OSx for day-to-day computing and running Windows Vista Enterprise x64 in a virtual machine in VMware Fusion as needed. Below is a listing of software I installed so far to replace software that I used to run on a Windows-based PC.

  • Adium - Adium is a chat client that like Trillian allows you to connect to multiple chat services in one program.
  • ClamXav - ClamXav is an anti-virus program built on ClamAV.
  • Cyberduck - Cyberduck is an FTP, SFTP, WebDav, and Amazon S3 client.
  • Flip4Mac - Flip4Mac plays Windows Media files in QuickTime.
  • Mac OSx Synergy Configurator - Mac OSx Synergy Configurator is a user interface for interacting with the Mac version of Synergy.
  • Remote Desktop Connection - Remote Desktop Connection allows you to connect to Windows-based machines via RDP.
  • Tweetr - Tweetr is an Adobe AIR powered Twitter client.
  • VMware Fusion - VMware Fusion is VMware's Mac version of VMware and it allows you to run virtual machines on the Mac.

    Hi Dan,

Before I upgraded to 4GB of RAM, I was alloting 1GB of RAM to a Vista VM and it was running smoothly. Now I allot 2GB of RAM to the Vista VM.
