Do you moderate a Yahoo! group?

written by Ryan Olshan on Sunday, January 22 2006

If you moderate or own a Yahoo! group, then you should be aware that there is currently a virus outbreak where somebody or several people are spamming groups by impersonating known email addresses that subscribe to the group, and even know enough to impersonate as unmoderated members. I have a feeling this is an inside job. Keep this blog post in mind before you jump the gun and ban and/or report a member who really didn't spam your group.

So, if these guys are good, and can spoof real people, how do we tell the difference between a real person SPAMing and these hacks SPAMing into the Yahoo group?

You'll notice spam type emails getting posted to your group with subjects such as Desperate Housewives, XXX Video, and other things I'd rather not post as a comment. Basically, anything that comes into your group around this time that looks like spam is most likely part of this fiasco. Spoofing an email to a Yahoo! group is as easy as changing your from address in your email client or a web form. Pretty sad.
